Stichting Sustainable Finance Lab (commonly referred to as Sustainable Finance Lab) is a Netherlands-registered foundation (stichting) that operates as a non-profit platform dedicated to advancing research, public debate, and practical collaboration around sustainable finance and the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into financial decision-making. The organization positions itself as a convening body that brings together stakeholders from academia, financial institutions, policymakers, regulators, civil society and corporate actors to identify barriers, develop tools and share evidence-based approaches for aligning financial flows with long-term sustainability objectives. As a stichting under Dutch law, the entity conducts its activities through collaborative projects, research commissioning, events and the publication of reports and practical guidance aimed at both practitioners and policy audiences. Core business activities - Research facilitation and commissioning: The foundation commissions, coordinates and publicizes independent research and policy analysis on topics related to sustainable finance. This typically includes applied research into risk assessment frameworks, alignment methodologies, the economic implications of sustainability transitions for financial institutions, and the design of financial products and regulatory approaches that support sustainable outcomes. - Convening and stakeholder engagement: A central activity of the foundation is organizing convenings—such as roundtables, symposiums, workshops and public seminars—that bring together diverse stakeholders to exchange evidence, surface practical barriers and co-design solutions. These events aim to foster dialogue between researchers, asset managers, banks, pension funds, insurers, regulators and civil-society organizations. - Knowledge products and publications: The organization produces and disseminates reports, working papers, policy briefings and practitioner-oriented guidance addressing topics such as climate risk integration, transition finance, impact measurement and disclosure practices. These publications are intended to translate academic findings into actionable recommendations for market participants and policymakers. - Policy engagement and advisory inputs: The foundation provides structured inputs into public policy processes by developing evidence-based recommendations and translating research findings into proposals for regulatory or market reforms. Activities in this area often take the form of response papers, expert panels or participation in consultation processes led by public authorities or standard-setting bodies. - Capacity building and training: To increase market capacity for sustainable finance practices, the foundation organizes educational workshops and targeted training sessions for professionals in banking, investment management, pension funds and insurance. These programs focus on methodological topics such as ESG integration, scenario analysis, climate-related financial risk assessment and the use of sustainability-related metrics in investment decision-making. - Applied pilots and collaborative projects: The organization often acts as a neutral convener for pilot projects that test new tools, data approaches or governance arrangements in real-world settings. Such pilots are designed to bridge the gap between theoretical research and operational implementation, providing practical lessons and demonstrated models that can be scaled up by market participants. Main products and services - Research reports and white papers: The foundation issues in-depth analytical reports and shorter policy briefs that synthesize evidence, propose frameworks and recommend next steps for stakeholders in the financial system. These publications are distributed publicly to maximize uptake and inform debate. - Events and roundtables: A regular program of seminars, workshops and conferences designed to inform, educate and catalyze collaboration among practitioners, researchers and policymakers. Event outputs commonly include summary notes, recordings and follow-up materials. - Advisory inputs and position papers: Written inputs prepared for public consultations, regulatory reviews or multistakeholder processes. These products distill research findings into concrete recommendations tailored to the needs of regulators, supervisors and industry bodies. - Practical toolkits and methodological guidance: Documents and resources aimed at helping practitioners operationalize sustainable finance concepts—examples include guidance on integrating climate risks into credit analysis, methodologies for defining alignment or transition pathways, and templates for disclosure or stewardship strategies. - Training modules and workshops: Short courses and bespoke training sequences for financial-sector staff and institutional investors intended to build technical competence in ESG integration, scenario analysis and climate risk quantification. Operational model and positioning Stichting Sustainable Finance Lab typically operates as a neutral, research-oriented convening organization rather than as a commercial provider of financial products. Its work emphasizes evidence generation, translation of academic insights into practice, and collaborative problem solving across the public and private sectors. Funding for the foundation’s activities generally comes from a combination of grants, project-based funding and institutional partnerships, which supports commissioned research, events and the production of public knowledge resources. By focusing on both conceptual frameworks and applied pilots, the foundation seeks to lower information and coordination barriers that impede mainstreaming sustainable finance practices. Target audiences and impact pathways Primary audiences for the foundation’s work include financial institutions (banks, asset managers, insurers and pension funds), policymakers and regulators, academic researchers, and civil-society organizations engaged in financial-system reform. The intended impact pathways are (1) influencing policy design through evidence-based recommendations, (2) improving practitioner capabilities via training and methodological guidance, and (3) demonstrating operational solutions through collaborative pilots and shared best practices that can be adopted and scaled by market participants. Public transparency and outputs The foundation typically makes its research outputs and event materials publicly available through its website and disseminates findings via public events and stakeholder briefings. Its role as a convener and knowledge broker aims to support a constructive interface between scholarship and practice, helping to align financial decisions with long-term sustainability challenges while offering practical tools and policy options to accelerate that alignment.
