Business Strategy Intern

Why this role exists

As Ultimo continues to grow and expand its SaaS and AI-driven offerings, the way it goes to market becomes increasingly important. New products, new customer segments, and new monetisation models require thoughtful strategic choices, not just execution.

This role exists to support those decisions. The Strategy Traineeship is designed to help Ultimo step back, analyse its go-to-market approach, and shape how AI-enabled solutions are positioned, packaged, and scaled. By bringing in a dedicated strategy trainee, Ultimo creates space for structured analysis, fresh perspectives, and focused ownership of a high-impact GTM initiative that feeds directly into senior decision-making.

About the Role

As part of the office of the Chief Operating Officer at IFS Ultimo , the Business Strategy Intern will work on a clearly defined strategic project within a high-growth SaaS company.

This role is designed as a 4-month, hands-on strategy engagement, providing real ownership of a high-impact go-to-market (GTM) initiative, with direct exposure to senior commercial and marketing leaders.

You will be embedded within the Business Operations team and contribute to reshaping the GTM, including AI-enabled products and offerings. This internship is ideal for someone who wants to gain practical experience delivering structured strategy work with clear outcomes and executive-facing deliverables.

This is a hybrid role, located in the Netherlands. The Strategy Intern can work mostly online, but may be needed to come into the Ultimo HQ at Nunspeet for key meetings or presentation of the strategic project deliverables.

Strategic Project & Deliverables

Over the course of the 4-month internship, you will own and deliver a structured SaaS GTM strategy project, with a strong focus on AI GTM.

Key elements of the project will include:

Strategic Focus Areas

  • Analysis of the current SaaS and AI GTM approach, including target customers, value propositions, and routes to market.

  • Market, customer, and competitive analysis to identify growth opportunities and differentiation, particularly for AI-driven capabilities.

  • Evaluation of pricing, packaging, and monetisation considerations for AI and SaaS offerings.

  • Assessment of GTM execution levers such as segmentation, positioning, sales motion, and enablement.

Core Deliverables

  • A comprehensive GTM strategy report covering:

  • Market and customer insights derived from data and research

  • Clear strategic recommendations and prioritised opportunities

  • A proposed GTM execution plan, including key actions, milestones, and success metrics

  • A structured executive-ready presentation summarising insights, recommendations, and next steps.

  • Supporting analysis and models used to inform strategic conclusions.

You will receive guidance and feedback throughout the project, while being expected to take increasing ownership as the internship progresses.

What You'll Gain

  • End-to-end ownership of a real strategic GTM project in a high-growth SaaS environment.

  • Practical experience developing strategy, insights, and execution plans used by senior leaders.

  • Exposure to AI GTM and SaaS monetisation strategies in a commercial setting.

  • Mentorship and coaching from experienced strategy and operations leaders.

  • A strong portfolio piece demonstrating structured strategy work and tangible deliverables.

  • A monthly traineeship allowance

Company Address: N/A

Ultimo Software Solutions is a commercial software company that develops and delivers enterprise maintenance and asset management software for organizations seeking to manage physical assets, maintenance activities, and related operational processes. The company's core offering centers on Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) capabilities delivered as configurable software suites designed to support maintenance planning, work order management, asset lifecycle management, calibration, inventory control, procurement, and regulatory quality and safety processes. Ultimo’s product portfolio is oriented toward enabling organizations to increase asset availability, improve maintenance efficiency, reduce downtime and costs, and ensure compliance with inspection, calibration and safety requirements. Ultimo’s principal business activities include software product development, product configuration and integration, implementation services, customer training, and ongoing technical support. The company provides a modular software platform that organisations can adapt to their operational needs; common modules address reactive and preventive maintenance scheduling, predictive maintenance interfaces, asset registers and hierarchies, spare parts and warehouse management, procurement workflows, inspection and audit planning, and document/contract management. In addition to functional modules, Ultimo typically offers mobile applications for technicians to access work orders and asset information in the field, dashboards and business intelligence tools for performance monitoring, and APIs or connectors to integrate with enterprise systems such as ERP, SCADA, building management systems and IoT platforms. The primary delivery model promoted by Ultimo is software-as-a-service (SaaS) cloud deployment, though many enterprise-grade installations also support on-premises or hybrid arrangements depending on customer requirements for data residency, integration, and availability. Professional services commonly offered by the company include project management, business process analysis, configuration and customization of the system to reflect the customer’s maintenance processes, data migration from legacy systems, user training programs, and post-implementation support services. These services aim to accelerate adoption, align the software with client workflows, and realize measurable operational benefits from digitalising maintenance processes. Ultimo’s software is positioned for use across sectors where effective asset and maintenance management is critical, including manufacturing and process industries, utilities and energy, pharmaceuticals and life sciences, healthcare and hospitals, transportation and logistics, facilities management, and public sector organisations. Typical use cases involve planning and executing maintenance tasks to improve equipment uptime, managing inspection and calibration schedules for regulated assets, controlling spare parts inventories and procurement to minimise stock-outs and obsolescence, and documenting maintenance history and compliance evidence for audits and regulatory reporting. The platform is also used to centralise maintenance data to support continuous improvement programs, root-cause analysis, and reliability engineering initiatives. Functionality frequently promoted by the company includes configurable work order management workflows (including scheduling, assignment, prioritisation and escalation), asset lifecycle management (including hierarchical asset registers, technical documentation and BOMs), preventive and predictive maintenance scheduling, condition monitoring and IoT-data integration, calibration and inspection planning, spare parts and warehouse management, procurement and purchase order management, reporting and analytics, mobile technician apps, and user role-based access controls. The software typically supports multi-site operations and multi-language deployments to accommodate organisations with distributed facilities. Integration capabilities are commonly highlighted as important for customers that need to connect maintenance data with financial systems, HR systems for resource planning, or manufacturing execution systems for synchronising downtime events. Ultimo also emphasizes customer support and ongoing product development, maintaining a product roadmap that incorporates industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and technological trends such as IoT-enabled maintenance, predictive analytics, and cloud-native service delivery. The company typically provides documentation, training materials, and customer support channels to help users operate and optimise their maintenance programs. Implementation methodologies often include a discovery phase to map existing processes and data, configuration and testing phases, end-user training, and a formal go-live plus hypercare period to ensure adoption and early problem resolution. Customers of Ultimo typically range from mid-sized organisations to large enterprises with significant physical asset portfolios. Benefits reported by users of EAM/CMMS platforms like Ultimo include improved maintenance planning and execution, longer asset lifecycles, reduced emergency repairs, better spare parts availability, clearer compliance records, and improved visibility into maintenance spend and performance metrics. These outcomes make EAM/CMMS solutions relevant to operational leaders, maintenance managers, reliability engineers, facility managers, and compliance officers responsible for asset-intensive operations. The company’s communications focus on aligning maintenance and asset management processes with broader business objectives—reducing operational risk, optimising maintenance spend, and supporting reliability and sustainability goals. While Ultimo’s product and service descriptions emphasise technical depth in maintenance and asset management, they are also positioned as business solutions that support operational resilience and regulatory compliance in asset-dependent industries. For the most current and detailed product specifications, deployment options, and regional availability, the company’s official website and published product literature should be consulted.
