Company Information

Company Name: SMART Photonics

Company Address: N/A

SMART Photonics is a Netherlands‑based photonic integrated circuit (PIC) foundry and technology provider that offers wafer fabrication and related services for designers and manufacturers of integrated photonic components. Operating as a dedicated foundry for indium phosphide (InP) based photonic integration, the company focuses on providing process technologies, design kits, manufacturing runs, and test capabilities that enable customers to move photonic designs from concept through prototyping to pilot and volume production. SMART Photonics positions itself as a full‑service supply chain partner for organizations that require active photonic functionality on a monolithic III‑V semiconductor platform, with an emphasis on integrating active and passive optical components on the same chip. Core business activities at SMART Photonics center on foundry manufacturing and process development for InP photonic integrated circuits. The company provides a fabrication environment tailored to III‑V epitaxial material stacks and a toolkit of standardized building blocks and library components that customers use to design PICs. Typical process offerings include epitaxial wafer processing, high‑resolution lithography, etch and deposition steps optimized for InP, high‑quality facet and grating couplers, metallization for electrical routing, and wafer‑level testing and characterization. SMART Photonics operates multi‑project wafer (MPW) runs to enable cost‑effective prototyping for multiple customers on the same wafer, as well as dedicated runs for development and small‑scale production. These foundry services are combined with technical support, design rule guidance, and process design kits (PDKs) that allow photonic designers to simulate, layout, and verify circuits prior to fabrication. A central element of the company’s offering is its library of photonic building blocks that designers can assemble to create integrated circuits. These building blocks typically include active devices such as distributed feedback (DFB) and tunable lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), electro‑optic modulators, and high‑speed photodetectors, together with passive components such as single‑mode waveguides, splitters and combiners, multimode interferometers (MMIs), arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs), wavelength filters, and polarization elements. By supporting integration of both active and passive elements on an InP platform, SMART Photonics enables fully integrated transmitter, receiver, and transceiver circuits where light generation, modulation, amplification, routing, and detection are combined on one chip. The company also supports custom component integration and complex circuit designs to meet application‑specific performance targets. In addition to fabrication, SMART Photonics provides services that support system integration and downstream manufacturing. These services commonly include wafer probing and on‑wafer testing to assess optical and electrical performance, dicing and facet preparation, and coordination with packaging partners for fiber coupling, flip‑chip bonding, temperature control, and hermetic sealing when required. The company’s foundry model typically facilitates collaborations with packaging houses and test labs to deliver turnkey or semi‑turnkey modules to customers who require packaged photonic subsystems rather than bare dies. By combining wafer‑level process control with a set of standardized design elements, the company aims to reduce iteration cycles for customers and shorten time‑to‑market for new PIC‑based products. SMART Photonics serves a range of customer segments that leverage integrated photonics, including telecommunications and datacom (high‑speed optical transceivers and coherent transmitters/receivers), optical sensing and instrumentation (including spectroscopy and environmental sensing), lidar and ranging systems, industrial and biomedical optics, and emerging applications in quantum photonics where III‑V materials can provide active components not available in passive silicon platforms. The foundry’s support for high‑performance laser sources and photodetectors on a single chip is especially relevant where compact, energy‑efficient, and tightly integrated optical subsystems are required. The company also places emphasis on design enablement and ecosystem engagement. SMART Photonics typically supplies PDKs and documentation that describe device models, layout rules, component specifications, and test methodologies so that customers and academic partners can design using established building blocks and simulation models. This design infrastructure is intended to make it simpler for system designers and research groups to adopt InP photonic integration without building their own fabrication capabilities. Furthermore, the foundry model supports academic collaborations, research projects, and industrial consortia by providing access to MPW runs and reliable fabrication processes. While the core technical focus is on InP‑based photonic integration, SMART Photonics also works within the broader photonics supply chain, collaborating with material suppliers, equipment vendors, packaging specialists, and test houses to deliver end‑to‑end solutions. The company’s capabilities are geared toward customers who require performance advantages derived from active III‑V devices—such as on‑chip lasers and optical amplifiers—combined with compact photonic circuit layouts that cannot be achieved with discrete components. Overall, SMART Photonics functions as a specialized foundry enabling the design and manufacturing of integrated photonic circuits on an indium phosphide platform. Its combination of process technologies, component libraries, MPW prototyping, dedicated runs, test and packaging coordination, and design support services aims to help customers translate photonic designs into manufacturable products across telecom, sensing, industrial, and emerging photonics markets. The company’s offerings are tailored to organizations that require III‑V active functionality integrated with passive waveguides and passive components on a monolithic PIC platform.
