Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the cloud computing subsidiary of Amazon.com that provides on-demand cloud computing platforms and APIs to individuals, companies and governments on a metered pay-as-you-go basis. Officially described on its website as “the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform,” AWS offers a wide range of global cloud-based products and services that enable organizations to run virtually all aspects of their IT environments — from basic compute and storage to advanced database, analytics, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), security, and application deployment and management services. AWS’s offerings are organized into service categories including compute, storage, database, networking & content delivery, security, identity & compliance, developer tools, management & governance, analytics, machine learning & artificial intelligence, mobile, IoT, edge computing, application integration, media services, and business applications. At a high level, AWS’s core business activity is providing infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS), and a broad portfolio of managed services that let customers avoid the capital expense and operational complexity of building and maintaining physical data centers and servers. Compute services — notably Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) for scalable virtual servers and AWS Lambda for serverless compute — enable customers to run workloads with flexible sizing and billing models. Storage services such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) provide durable object and block storage. AWS’s database services include managed relational database engines (Amazon Relational Database Service — RDS, and Amazon Aurora), NoSQL databases (Amazon DynamoDB), in-memory stores (Amazon ElastiCache), and data warehousing (Amazon Redshift). Networking and delivery services include Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) for isolated networks, Amazon Route 53 for DNS and domain registration, and Amazon CloudFront for content delivery. For security and access management, the platform offers AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), AWS Key Management Service (KMS), AWS Shield and AWS WAF for protection against network and application-layer threats, and numerous compliance and governance controls. Developer and DevOps tooling such as AWS CloudFormation, AWS CodeCommit, AWS CodePipeline, and AWS CodeBuild help automate infrastructure provisioning, CI/CD pipelines, and application deployment. AWS also provides specialized managed services for container orchestration (Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service — EKS and Amazon Elastic Container Service — ECS) and big data/analytics (Amazon EMR, AWS Glue, Amazon Athena). Beyond core infrastructure, AWS invests heavily in higher-level products for machine learning and AI, offering Amazon SageMaker for building, training and deploying ML models, pre-trained AI services for vision, speech, language, and forecasting, and inferencing services optimized for edge and cloud. IoT services support device connectivity, secure device management, and data ingestion. Edge computing offerings and local zone/Outposts options give customers the ability to run AWS infrastructure on-premises or closer to end users to meet latency or data residency requirements. AWS operates a global infrastructure of Regions, Availability Zones, edge locations, and local zones to provide high availability, resilience, and geographic data residency options. For customers in Canada, AWS operates a Canada (Central) Region (ca-central-1) located in the Montreal area, providing Canadian customers the ability to keep data and workloads in-country and meet regulatory or sovereignty requirements. AWS continually expands its global footprint with new regions and availability zones to address local market demand and regulatory needs. AWS serves a broad set of customer segments including startups, enterprise companies, public sector organizations, academic institutions, and government agencies. Its customer base spans industries such as finance, healthcare, media and entertainment, retail, manufacturing, and the public sector. To support customer adoption, AWS provides professional services, consulting, technical support plans, a large partner ecosystem through the AWS Partner Network (APN), training programs, and certification offerings intended to help organizations build skills and accelerate migrations. AWS’s commercial model is primarily usage-based pricing, with a variety of pricing options and purchasing models such as on-demand, reserved instances, savings plans, spot instances, and enterprise discount programs. The company also operates the AWS Marketplace, a digital catalog that enables customers to find, buy, and immediately deploy third-party software and services that run on AWS. Amazon Web Services places emphasis on continuous innovation, broad service availability, operational security, compliance, and a focus on customer-driven product development. Official material from AWS highlights its scale, breadth of services (numbering in the hundreds), global infrastructure, and ecosystem as key differentiators. AWS’s portfolio is constantly evolving with new services, instance types, managed offerings, and regional expansions aimed at meeting enterprise, developer, and government needs for scalable, secure, and flexible cloud infrastructure and platform services.
