Job Description

U Emerging Markets — Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and Ireland — represent over a quarter of Europe's population and nearly a quarter of EU5 GDP, yet remain one of Amazon's largest untapped growth opportunities on the continent. The E3 (Emerging, Exports & Expansions) Tech organization exists to close that gap.

As a Sr. SDE on the E3 Emerging Markets team, you will design and own the distributed systems and services that directly shape how customers discover products, how sellers expand across borders, and how Amazon competes with entrenched local players across five high-growth European markets. This is a greenfield-heavy, high-ownership role — you will architect next-generation capabilities in local selection, same-day delivery CX, and automated seller expansion, working from our Bangalore engineering hub alongside teams in Luxembourg and Hyderabad. Every system you build has a direct line to customer experience and the P&L.

Key job responsibilities

Design, build, and own distributed systems and services that power customer experience, seller experience, and fulfillment capabilities across EU Emerging Markets stores
Lead technical design and architecture for high-impact, time-sensitive initiatives — including same-day delivery CX features (FST, storefront, basket-building), AI/ML-powered local selection identification, and automated seller expansion platforms
Work across ambiguous, greenfield problem spaces where requirements evolve and the right solution requires both technical depth and business judgment
Partner with EU5 host teams, product managers, and business stakeholders to secure prioritization for EM-specific needs and deliver incremental launches without sacrificing architectural integrity
Drive data-driven decision-making — instrument systems for metric monitoring, build automation for auditing, and own the business outcomes your systems enable
Mentor engineers, conduct rigorous code reviews, and raise the technical bar of the team
Contribute to the E3 GenAI productivity strategy — leveraging Amazon Config Service (ACS), Freebird, and Amazon GenAI tools to drive meaningful efficiency gains in feature delivery

A day in the life
You might start the morning reviewing the technical design for a new local brand identification model — an AI/ML solution that needs to reliably surface locally relevant selection across five EU markets at scale. By afternoon, you're in a design review for the Same-Day CX feature set launching across NL/BE/SE/IE, working through the FST and storefront defaulting logic with engineers in Luxembourg. Later, you're unblocking a junior engineer on the PanEU FBA Demand implementation, and closing the day by reviewing metrics from the Belgium MFC launch pipeline. Every decision you make has a direct line to customer experience and the P&L.

About the team
Amazon's EU Emerging Markets stores — Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and Ireland — represent 26% of Europe's population and 24% of EU5 GDP, yet remain one of Amazon's largest untapped growth opportunities on the continent. That gap is the opportunity.

The E3 Tech organization was established to close it. We are a newly unified engineering team spanning Emerging Markets, Exports, and Expansion, operating under a single technical charter to build the systems that will make Amazon the preferred shopping destination across Europe's fastest-growing markets. We work on greenfield problems with real P&L stakes — every system we build directly impacts customer experience, seller success, and Amazon's path to profitability in these stores.

We are building our Bangalore engineering team as a core part of this mission. You will work alongside engineers in Luxembourg and Hyderabad, partnering closely with EU business, product, and partner teams to deliver at Amazon scale.

Amazon Dev Center India - Hyderabad is the Hyderabad engineering and technology campus of Amazon’s India development organization, established to provide product development, research, and operational engineering services for Amazon’s global businesses. Operated under Amazon’s India development footprint, the Hyderabad center hosts software engineering, data science, machine learning, infrastructure, and systems teams that design, build, test, and maintain core features and services used across Amazon’s consumer-facing products and cloud offerings. The center functions as a multidisciplinary engineering hub contributing to a broad set of technology domains including e‑commerce platform services, cloud computing (AWS), artificial intelligence and machine learning, voice services (Alexa), digital media (Prime Video and Kindle), payments and advertising technologies, and logistics and supply‑chain systems. Company overview and role within Amazon: The Hyderabad development center is part of Amazon’s global network of product and technology centers. It serves as a regional engineering headquarters that supports both India‑specific programs and global product teams. Teams located at the Hyderabad site collaborate with product owners, designers, and engineering teams across Amazon to deliver software products, cloud services, and infrastructure components. The facility is organized to support full lifecycle product development: ideation, prototyping, engineering, quality assurance, deployment, and ongoing operations and support. Core business activities: The primary workstreams at the development center are software development and research & development for Amazon’s products and services. Core activities include designing and implementing backend services and APIs, building and scaling distributed systems, developing frontend and mobile experiences, architecting and operating cloud infrastructure, and developing machine learning models and data pipelines to support personalization, recommendations, search relevance, fraud prevention, demand forecasting, and automation. In addition, teams at the Hyderabad center undertake systems engineering, site reliability engineering (SRE), security engineering, and performance engineering to ensure high‑availability and secure operation of Amazon services. The center also runs engineering programs for localization and regionalization of Amazon products to meet market‑specific requirements and regulatory needs. Main products and services developed or supported: While the Hyderabad campus is not a standalone commercial company producing independent consumer products, it contributes engineering work to a wide array of Amazon’s product lines. Typical areas of contribution include: - E‑commerce and retail platform components that power the Amazon storefront, catalog management, seller services, pricing, and order processing workflows. - Amazon Web Services (AWS) features and infrastructure components, where engineers contribute to cloud computing services, storage, networking, and tooling used internally and by AWS customers. - Alexa and voice services, including natural language understanding, speech recognition, and localized voice experiences tailored for regional markets. - Prime Video and digital media tooling, including backend systems for content delivery, metadata management, personalization, and analytics. - Payments and Amazon Pay systems, including fraud detection, transaction processing, and integrations with local financial partners. - Advertising technologies for Amazon Ads, covering ad serving, auction systems, targeting, measurement, and analytics. - Logistics, supply‑chain, and operations technologies that support fulfillment center automation, routing, capacity planning, and last‑mile delivery optimizations. Organizational aspects and talent: The Hyderabad center recruits across a wide range of engineering and technical roles including software development engineers (SDEs) at multiple levels, data scientists, applied scientists, machine learning engineers, quality assurance and test engineers, product managers, UX designers, and technical program managers. The site also hosts internship and early‑career programs designed to attract university talent and provide project‑based learning opportunities. Recruitment and career information for roles at the Hyderabad location are published and managed through Amazon’s global careers portal, where job descriptions outline responsibilities, required technical skills, and team focus areas. Technology and engineering practices: Engineering teams at the Hyderabad center follow Amazon’s established software development and operational practices, including microservices architecture, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), automated testing, distributed tracing and monitoring, and data‑driven product decision making.
