Company Information

Company Name: IMDb.com, Inc.

Company Website: https://www.imdb.com

Company Address: Seattle, Washington, United States

IMDb.com, Inc. is an online information and technology company that operates a large, publicly accessible database of film, television, and entertainment industry information. Founded in 1990 by Col Needham and a small group of film enthusiasts, the site grew from a volunteer-maintained Usenet resource into one of the most widely consulted entertainment reference services on the internet. IMDb aggregates authoritative metadata about motion pictures, television programs, home videos, video games, and streaming content, and couples that structured data with editorial material, user-generated contributions, professional listings, news, multimedia (trailers, photos), and commercial services for industry professionals. In 1998 IMDb was acquired by Amazon.com, Inc. and since then has operated as a technology-driven subsidiary within Amazon’s portfolio while maintaining its brand and public consumer-facing services. At its core, IMDb’s business activity centers on collecting, curating, and distributing structured entertainment data and on providing web and mobile experiences that allow consumers and professionals to search, discover, and research film and television titles, cast and crew credits, biographies, release information, production details, and ratings. The primary consumer experience is the IMDb website and associated mobile applications, which present title pages containing credits, plot summaries, technical specifications, user and critic ratings, release dates, box office information (including integration of Box Office Mojo data), and links to streaming availability. IMDb’s pages commonly include editorial content such as news stories, lists (e.g., Top Rated Movies), awards information, and photo and video galleries. The site supports user participation through registered-user contributions (such as corrections, trivia, goofs, and cast/crew additions), user ratings that aggregate into weighted average scores, and community features that allow for lists and reviews. In addition to the public-facing free service supported by advertising, IMDb operates several commercial products and services. IMDbPro is a subscription service targeted at industry professionals that offers expanded title pages, contact information for agents and representation, casting and production listings, industry news, and tools for managing professional credits and visibility. IMDb also provides data licensing for third parties and commercial partners, supplying structured datasets and access to licensed metadata and imagery for use in third-party services, apps, and enterprise systems. For researchers and developers, IMDb publishes a set of downloadable plain-text datasets (IMDb Datasets) that contain title basics, ratings, principal cast and crew, and other machine-readable extracts intended for personal and non-commercial use under specified terms; these datasets are commonly used for data analysis, academic research, and third-party tooling. Over time, IMDb expanded its service offerings through acquisitions and product launches. The company owns and operates Box Office Mojo, a box-office reporting and analysis site, and historically has offered free, ad-supported streaming under the IMDb-branded streaming service (originally IMDb TV), which later became integrated into Amazon’s ad-supported streaming efforts. IMDb’s platform integrates multimedia such as trailers and clips and links to transactional and subscription streaming availability, reflecting broader industry shifts toward online distribution and discovery. On the consumer side, IMDb’s ranking and rating systems (notably the IMDb Top 250) and its large user-contributed review base have become widely cited references for audience sentiment and popular rankings. From a technology standpoint, IMDb maintains a large, structured content repository and search infrastructure designed to support fast, global access across web and mobile platforms. The service emphasizes data accuracy through a combination of staff editorial oversight and community contribution workflows; contributions are reviewed and validated before permanent incorporation. IMDb’s products combine content management, search, recommendation features, APIs and data exports (for permitted use), and advertising and subscription billing systems. Commercially, the company’s revenue streams include advertising on the free site, subscription fees for IMDbPro, licensing and data services for third parties, and commercial opportunities associated with streaming and transactional content linking. As part of Amazon, IMDb benefits from integration with Amazon’s broader consumer and technology ecosystem while continuing to serve as a distinct entertainment database and discovery tool. IMDb publicly describes itself on its about pages as a leading source of information about movies, TV shows and celebrities, emphasizing its role as a widely used reference for general audiences and industry professionals alike. The company’s services are used by consumers for discovery and research, by journalists and critics for reference material, and by industry professionals for credits, contact information, and professional tools. IMDb’s combination of extensive metadata, user-generated content, editorial material, and industry-oriented premium services positions it at the intersection of entertainment content, data services, and digital media technology.
