Company Information

Company Name: Audible GmbH

Company Website: https://www.audible.de

Company Address: Köpenicker Straße 126, 10997 Berlin, Germany

Audible GmbH is the German legal entity and regional operating unit of Audible, a global provider of downloadable spoken-word entertainment and audiobooks. Audible traces its origins to Audible, Inc., founded in 1995 by Don Katz in the United States, and later acquired by Amazon in 2008; Audible GmbH operates as the company's local presence for German-language markets and for localized services and content distribution in Germany and surrounding regions. The company’s publicly described business focus is on producing, licensing, distributing and selling digital audio content, with particular emphasis on audiobooks, audio drama, podcasts, and original spoken-word productions. As a technology-driven content and distribution company, Audible GmbH’s core activities encompass the digital retail and subscription distribution of audio content, the commissioning and production of original programming, tooling and marketplace services for content creators, and the operation of platform and application technology that enables playback, discovery and device integration. Audible’s retail offering is centered on a consumer-facing digital storefront (operating in Germany at audible.de) and accompanying mobile and connected-device applications for iOS, Android and other platforms. These apps provide functionality for streaming and downloading purchased content, managing personal libraries, offline listening, chapter navigation, bookmarking, sleep timers, and adjustable narration speed. Audible’s platform also integrates with voice assistant and device ecosystems (including Amazon Alexa) to enable hands-free playback and cross-device synchronization. Audible’s principal product types and consumer services include: (1) Single-title purchases of audiobooks and audio content; (2) subscription membership plans that provide monthly credits redeemable for titles and access to curated catalogs — historically marketed under names such as Audible Plus and Audible Premium Plus in various territories; (3) a catalog of “Audible Originals” and commissioned audio dramas and non-fiction series produced by Audible Studios; (4) podcasts and exclusive spoken-word series; and (5) additional digital features such as Whispersync for Voice (which synchronizes reading position between Kindle ebooks and corresponding audiobooks where available). Audible’s commercial model combines direct sales, subscription access, and exclusive and first-release arrangements with publishers, rights-holders and independent producers. On the content production and creator side, Audible (including its regional operations) supports and operates initiatives to facilitate audiobook creation and talent matchmaking. Notably, Audible operates ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange), a marketplace and production platform that connects authors, publishers and rights holders with narrators and producers to create and distribute audiobooks to Audible’s retail channels. Audible and its studios also commission and produce original audio works, employing a mix of in-house production capabilities and external partnerships with voice actors, directors and sound engineers to create serialized fiction, investigative journalism, biography, comedy and other spoken-word formats. From a technology standpoint, Audible is a digital platform company: it manages content ingestion and rights-management workflows with publishers and rights-holders, operates digital storefront infrastructure and payment systems, and develops cross-platform client applications. Audible’s applications support DRM-protected downloads and playback, cloud-based library syncing and device management. The company invests in metadata, personalization and recommendation systems to help users discover content, and in localization processes to deliver regionally relevant catalogs, language support and curated editorial content for markets such as Germany. In Germany, Audible GmbH’s operations focus on serving German-speaking customers and producing or commissioning German-language content. The regional business works with major international and local publishers, literary agents, independent authors and production studios to expand German-language audiobook and audio-original offerings. Audible’s marketplace and publisher agreements enable the distribution of titles from traditional publishing houses as well as self-published and independently produced works. Audible’s catalog strategy in the German market includes translated international bestsellers, native German fiction and non-fiction, children’s content, and audio-first originals targeted to local listener preferences. Audible’s consumer-facing services emphasize convenience and continuity across devices: listeners can purchase or redeem credits for titles, download files for offline listening, and access subscription catalog content while connected. Audible also promotes features such as return/exchange policies for recent purchases and trial membership periods to lower barriers for new customers. For creators and rights-holders, Audible’s commercial programs provide revenue-sharing arrangements for sales and subscription consumption, plus technical distribution to Audible’s storefronts and partner channels. As part of the broader Audible organization owned by Amazon, Audible GmbH benefits from integration with Amazon’s retail, payment and device ecosystems, while operating localized marketing, editorial curation and content acquisition for the German market. Publicly available information about Audible emphasizes the company’s role in expanding access to spoken-word entertainment and in developing original audio content, positioning the company at the intersection of publishing, media production and digital-platform technology for audio distribution.
