Amazon Japan G.K. (Japanese: アマゾンジャパン合同会社), commonly referred to in English as Amazon Japan, is the Japanese subsidiary and local operating organization of Amazon.com that provides a broad range of internet-based retail, digital content and related services for consumers, third-party sellers and business customers in Japan. Operating the consumer-facing website and mobile marketplace at Amazon.co.jp, the company’s principal activities include operating an online marketplace and retail platform, providing logistics and fulfillment services for sellers, distributing digital content (including e-books, video and music), offering subscription services (notably Amazon Prime), selling consumer electronics and smart devices, and supporting cloud and business services through the broader Amazon group’s cloud infrastructure and offerings. Amazon Japan functions as the primary conduit through which Amazon’s global retail, digital media and device offerings are localized for the Japanese market. Company overview and core business activities - Marketplace and retail platform: Amazon Japan operates Amazon.co.jp, a localized online storefront that sells products directly (first-party retail) and hosts millions of listings from independent third-party sellers. The platform supports product discovery, search, customer reviews and localized payment and customer service in Japanese. - Third-party seller services and platform tools: Amazon Japan provides seller onboarding, listing tools, advertising and business analytics, and programs that enable domestic and international merchants to sell into the Japanese market. Programs such as Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) and seller-fulfilled options allow merchants to scale sales while relying on Amazon’s logistics services and marketplace reach. - Logistics and fulfillment: The company operates and coordinates a network of fulfillment centers, sortation and delivery stations across Japan. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) provides warehousing, picking, packing and shipping services for third-party sellers; Amazon Japan also manages last-mile delivery through Amazon Logistics and partner carriers to provide expedited delivery options and Prime delivery services to end customers. - Subscription and membership services: Amazon Prime in Japan bundles paid services including expedited and free domestic shipping, access to Prime Video (streaming video), Prime Music (streaming audio), Prime Reading (selected e-books and digital reading content), and other member benefits. Prime membership is a central retention and engagement product for the company’s consumer business in Japan. - Digital content, devices and media: Amazon Japan distributes digital goods such as e-books through the Kindle Store, audiobooks via Audible, streaming video via Prime Video and music streaming via Prime Music and Amazon Music. The company also markets and sells Amazon-branded hardware — including Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, and Echo smart speakers with Alexa — adapted for Japanese language and local services. - Payments and advertising: Amazon Pay options and merchant payment integrations are available to support checkout across Amazon.co.jp. The company also operates a business-to-business advertising platform enabling brands and sellers to run sponsored product and display advertising to reach Japanese shoppers on Amazon’s properties. - Corporate and business services: While Amazon Web Services (AWS) is operated through separate AWS legal entities in many countries, Amazon’s cloud and enterprise offerings have a significant presence in Japan via AWS’s Japan regions and local support; Amazon Japan coordinates with AWS to support enterprise and developer customers in the region. Main products and services - Amazon.co.jp retail marketplace (consumer website and mobile apps) offering millions of SKUs across categories including books, electronics, home goods, apparel, groceries, and more. - Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) and seller services that provide warehousing and fulfillment solutions and enable marketplace sellers to scale across Japan. - Amazon Prime membership services (shipping benefits, Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, exclusive sales events such as Prime Day and localized promotions). - Digital storefronts and content (Kindle Store for e-books, Prime Video for licensed and original streaming content, Amazon Music and Audible for audio content). - Amazon-branded devices localized for Japan (Kindle family, Fire tablets, Echo devices with Japanese-language Alexa functionality). - Logistics and delivery network (fulfillment centers, delivery stations, Amazon Logistics last-mile delivery services, partnerships with local carriers and delivery providers). - Advertising, marketing and merchant services that enable brands and sellers to advertise, manage inventory and analyze sales performance on the platform. Market role and localization Amazon Japan adapts Amazon’s global retail and technology platform to meet Japan’s consumer preferences and regulatory environment. This includes Japanese-language customer support, localized payments and invoicing, partnerships with domestic suppliers and carriers, and content licensing tailored for local audiences. Amazon.co.jp participates in major local retail events and seasonal promotions and supports local sellers and brands through seller programs. Corporate context and public positioning Amazon Japan operates as the primary local presence for Amazon’s retail and consumer offerings in Japan. It works in coordination with other Amazon group companies (including AWS) to provide technology infrastructure and enterprise services where applicable. The company’s public-facing positioning emphasizes customer convenience, selection, and speed of delivery through its Prime membership and logistics investments, as well as the availability of digital content and devices for Japanese consumers. Amazon’s broader corporate mission and policies (as stated by the parent company) guide its customer-centric and technology-driven approach, while Amazon Japan’s operations focus on adapting those capabilities to Japan’s market and customers. Note: This description summarizes verifiable, public-facing business activities, product lines and the localized role of Amazon Japan as the organization that operates Amazon’s consumer retail, digital content and related services in Japan. For official corporate filings, detailed legal entity information and localized contact details, consult Amazon Japan’s official website and corporate information pages.
