Company Information

Company Address: CHN, Beijing

Amazon (China) Holding Company Limited is the corporate designation associated with Amazon’s businesses and investments focused on the Greater China market and related regional activities. The Amazon brand entered China in the early 2000s and over time established multiple legal entities, commercial operations, and partnerships to provide retail e‑commerce, digital content, devices, logistics services and cloud computing offerings to consumers and enterprise customers in mainland China, Hong Kong and cross‑border sellers. This entity name is used in public filings and corporate registries to identify the group of Amazon operations that serve or invest in the China market; those operations in turn have historically been integrated with Amazon.com, Inc. global strategy while complying with PRC regulatory and market requirements. Company overview and corporate role Amazon’s presence in China has included a consumer retail storefront branded as Amazon China (previously operating domestic marketplace services), Kindle and digital content distribution, device sales (Kindle e‑readers and Fire tablets where available), seller services for merchants (cross‑border marketplace and fulfillment), and cloud infrastructure services delivered through Amazon Web Services (AWS) under locally partnered arrangements. The China-focused holding company functions primarily as a regional corporate vehicle for managing investments, personnel and contractual relationships tied to these operations. It is part of the broader Amazon corporate family that spans retail, cloud computing, advertising, digital media and devices. Core business activities in Greater China - E‑commerce and marketplace services: Amazon established an online retail presence in China to sell imported goods and, earlier, to host domestic third‑party sellers. In 2019 Amazon announced a strategic shift away from operating a local marketplace for most categories and moved to focus on cross‑border e‑commerce — enabling Chinese consumers to purchase products from international merchants and enabling Chinese sellers to reach global customers via Amazon’s global storefronts. Core services tied to e‑commerce include product listings, seller support, account management, and fulfillment programs. - Fulfillment and logistics services: For sellers using Amazon’s global selling services, the company provides fulfillment options including Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) for cross‑border shipments, warehouse and shipping coordination, and integration with local logistics partners. Amazon has historically utilized a mix of its own logistics resources and local third‑party carriers and service providers to meet regulatory and operational requirements in China. - Digital products and devices: Amazon has distributed Kindle e‑readers, e‑books, apps and digital media to Chinese consumers where regulatory and market conditions permit. Kindle storefronts and content partnerships have been part of Amazon’s consumer offering in the region. - Cloud computing (AWS China): AWS provides cloud computing services to enterprise and public sector customers in mainland China through region‑specific operations managed by local partner companies in compliance with Chinese law. Notably, AWS China regions are operated by local entities under partnership agreements (for example, previous public disclosures reference Beijing and Ningxia region arrangements with local operators). These China regions deliver core AWS products — compute, storage, databases, networking and enterprise services — while operating under mainland China regulatory frameworks and localized contracts. Main products and services Amazon’s principal offerings connected to its China operations include: 1) cross‑border retail and marketplace access allowing Chinese consumers to buy international goods and enabling Chinese merchants to sell internationally via Amazon’s global marketplaces; 2) logistics and seller services (FBA, international shipping integration and seller support); 3) digital content delivery and devices (Kindle ecosystem where supported); and 4) AWS cloud services delivered in China through locally operated regions and partners, offering scalable infrastructure, managed services, and enterprise‑grade networking and security tools. Regulatory and operational model Because of China’s regulatory environment for internet services, cloud infrastructure and data management, Amazon’s China operations have been structured with partnerships, localized legal entities, and compliance processes that align with local laws and administrative requirements. This includes operating AWS China regions through legally independent partner companies that hold the required domestic approvals, and tailoring retail operations (e.g., cross‑border commerce rather than a full domestic marketplace) to the evolving competitive and regulatory landscape. Over time Amazon has adjusted the scope of its China retail activities to emphasize international trade facilitation, cloud services, and business‑to‑business offerings. Business customers and market positioning Amazon’s customers in Greater China include individual e‑commerce buyers seeking international goods, Chinese exporters and merchants using Amazon’s global selling programs, developers and enterprises adopting AWS cloud infrastructure and related managed services, and publishers and consumers engaging with Kindle and digital media products where available. The company positions its China operations to leverage Amazon’s global technology platform, logistics expertise and cloud portfolio while complying with local partnership and regulatory requirements. Recent strategic developments and context A notable milestone in the region was Amazon’s 2019 announcement to cease most domestic marketplace operations in China and to refocus on cross‑border e‑commerce and AWS services—reflecting strategic prioritization in response to local competitive dynamics. AWS continues to expand cloud offerings in China through partner‑operated regions and localized services. Amazon’s device and digital content strategies in China have been adapted over time based on market demand and regulation. The holding company structure, including entities with names such as Amazon (China) Holding Company Limited, supports corporate governance, investment flows and legal compliance for these multifaceted activities. Sources and verifiability Information about Amazon’s China activities, its transition to cross‑border commerce, presence of AWS China regions operated with local partners, and the company’s distribution of Kindle devices and services is publicly documented in Amazon press releases, regulatory filings, AWS regional documentation and reputable news coverage. For authoritative and up‑to‑date details on specific legal entities, filings and addresses tied to a named holding company, official corporate registries and Amazon’s investor relations or legal disclosures should be consulted.
