Company Information

Company Name: AOSP - Manila

Company Website: https://source.android.com/

Company Address: Three E-Com Center Harbor Drive, Mall of Asia Complex Pasay, Metro Manila 1300 Philippines

Overview The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is the official open-source initiative led by Google that develops and publishes the core Android platform source code and associated upstream artifacts. AOSP provides the foundational software components, reference implementations, build system, and documentation that enable device manufacturers, independent developers, system integrators, and the wider open-source community to build, port, and customize the Android operating system. Although not a commercial company in itself, AOSP functions as a coordinated, publicly accessible project that underpins the Android ecosystem and is managed through Google’s engineering and release processes. Core business activities (project activities) AOSP’s primary activities are developing, maintaining, and publishing the Android platform source tree and associated tools. This includes maintaining the upstream Android Open Source code repositories, producing official platform releases (source tarballs and tags), publishing technical design documentation and developer guides, and operating the infrastructure that hosts source code and build artifacts. AOSP also coordinates release branches, security patches, and long-term support for specific platform branches, and it publishes security bulletins and kernel patchwork used by downstream device manufacturers and integrators. Main products and services The main outputs of AOSP are: (1) The Android platform source code (AOSP source tree) that forms the basis of Android releases; (2) Reference system images and factory images for select devices used for testing and validation; (3) Official documentation (including build instructions, system architecture docs, and platform API references) hosted on the project website; (4) Build tools and scripts to compile Android from source for supported hardware; and (5) Technical resources such as the Android Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) and links to the Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) that inform how device implementations can remain compatible with the broader Android ecosystem. Although AOSP itself does not sell products in the commercial sense, its deliverables enable numerous commercial offerings by OEMs, carriers, custom ROM projects, and application developers. Governance, contributors and licensing AOSP is governed operationally by engineering teams at Google who maintain the authoritative repositories, release metadata, and documentation. Contributions and interaction with the codebase occur through publicly visible mechanisms (git repositories, issue trackers, and documented contribution workflows). The platform’s code and many components are distributed under open-source licenses (primarily Apache License 2.0 for Android framework and BSD-style or GPL for certain kernel and driver components). Hardware vendors and third-party contributors frequently supply device-specific code, kernel patches, drivers, and HAL implementations under appropriate licenses that allow downstream integration. Relationship with device manufacturers and ecosystem Device manufacturers (OEMs), silicon vendors, and system integrators use AOSP as the common upstream source to create commercial Android products. OEMs typically take AOSP sources, merge in vendor-specific drivers and firmware, add preinstalled applications and services, and then certify or validate their product using compatibility tools and tests. Google’s broader Android ecosystem includes additional proprietary services and apps offered under license (for example Google Mobile Services on many consumer devices), but AOSP remains the freely available upstream platform independent of those proprietary add-ons. Security, maintenance and release cadence AOSP publishes security advisories, platform updates, and monthly security patch levels that OEMs and maintainers can integrate into product updates. The project maintains release branches for each major Android version and routinely issues tags for milestone builds and maintenance branches. Device maintainers and community ports rely on AOSP’s published branches and patches when backporting fixes, rebuilding images, or creating custom ROMs. Audience and typical use cases AOSP is used by a wide range of actors: hardware vendors creating Android devices, silicon vendors supplying low-level drivers, system integrators assembling Android-based platforms, mobile operators deploying devices, independent developers and hobbyists building custom firmware and ROMs, and academic or research groups studying mobile operating systems. It is also the starting point for many derivative distributions and embedded Android implementations. Documentation and community resources AOSP’s official documentation and source repositories are published on the project’s website, which includes step-by-step build instructions, platform architecture overviews, API and developer guides, and contribution guidelines. The public documentation is designed to help both first-time builders and experienced integrators understand the build system, repository layout, and upstream development practices. Summary In short, AOSP is the upstream open-source project that produces and documents the core Android platform. It does not operate as a commercial company but is a mission-critical, technology-focused initiative maintained by Google engineers and contributed to by OEMs, silicon vendors, and the open-source community. Its artifacts—source code, build tools, reference images, and documentation—are foundational to the Android device ecosystem and are widely used by commercial vendors, hobbyists, and researchers to create, modify, and distribute Android-based systems.
