Sentara Healthcare is a not-for-profit, integrated health system headquartered in southeastern Virginia that provides a broad continuum of clinical services and community-based health programs. As an integrated delivery network, Sentara combines hospital-based acute care with ambulatory care, primary and specialty physician practices, urgent care centers, outpatient imaging and laboratory services, home health and hospice programs, rehabilitation services, and population-health management programs to serve patients across Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The organization emphasizes coordinated care across multiple settings and invests in clinical programs, infrastructure, and technology to support continuity, quality and access to services. Core business activities include the operation and management of acute-care hospitals, outpatient facilities, and physician networks. Sentara operates multiple acute-care hospitals offering inpatient medical and surgical care, emergency medicine, intensive care, and a range of specialty services such as cardiovascular care, cancer services, neurosciences, women’s and children’s health, orthopedics and rehabilitation. In the ambulatory setting, the system supports primary care and specialty physician practices that provide preventive care, chronic disease management, diagnostics and outpatient procedures. Sentara also operates urgent care centers and walk-in clinics to provide after-hours and episodic care. In addition to direct clinical care, Sentara provides ancillary and support services necessary for a modern health system. These include diagnostic imaging and laboratory testing, pharmacy services, outpatient surgery centers, and post-acute services such as home health, hospice and skilled rehabilitation. The organization supports clinical integration initiatives that include care coordination, case management, and programs aimed at reducing hospital readmissions and improving transitions of care. Sentara’s infrastructure includes electronic health record systems, telehealth and virtual care platforms, and data analytics capabilities used to support clinical decision making, population-health initiatives, and quality-improvement programs. Sentara’s service offerings extend beyond individual patient encounters to system-level programs focused on population health and community benefit. The system engages in community health assessments and operates community outreach programs that address preventive care, chronic disease prevention and management, maternal and child health, behavioral health access, and services targeted to vulnerable populations. Sentara also runs health-education and wellness programs designed for patients, employers and community organizations, and offers employer health solutions and wellness partnerships to local businesses and institutions. Clinical specialties and programmatic offerings are organized to support comprehensive care pathways. Cardiology and cardiac surgery programs typically include advanced diagnostics, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac surgery and cardiac rehabilitation. Cancer services are provided through multidisciplinary programs that include medical and radiation oncology, infusion services, surgical oncology, supportive and survivorship care, and oncologic imaging and pathology. Neurosciences services typically provide stroke care, neurosurgery, neurocritical care and neurodiagnostics. Women’s and children’s services include obstetrics, gynecology, neonatal intensive care and pediatric specialties. Rehabilitation and orthopedics offerings cover joint replacement, sports medicine and inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation therapies. Sentara also participates in graduate medical education, clinical research and quality-improvement initiatives. Academic affiliations and residency programs support physician training in a range of specialties, and research programs and clinical trials in collaboration with clinical partners contribute to advancing care standards and treatment options. Quality and safety programs are embedded throughout the system with formal governance structures to monitor clinical outcomes, patient safety and regulatory compliance. Technology and digital health are integrated into Sentara’s care model through investments in electronic health records, interoperability, telemedicine/virtual visits, remote monitoring, and digital scheduling and patient engagement tools. These technologies are used to expand access to care—particularly for primary care, behavioral health and specialty consultations—while enabling care coordination across inpatient and outpatient settings. Sentara has also implemented initiatives to use data analytics and population-health tools to identify high-risk patients, manage chronic conditions and measure performance across clinical programs. As a large regional health system, Sentara maintains relationships with payers and participates in value-based payment models that emphasize quality, cost-efficiency and coordinated care. The system’s administrative functions include centralized support for finance, human resources, supply chain, compliance, information technology and marketing to enable standardized operations across its hospitals and ambulatory sites. Overall, Sentara Healthcare functions as a comprehensive health delivery organization that integrates hospital, outpatient and community services to deliver clinically coordinated care. The system’s operations encompass acute inpatient care, ambulatory and urgent care, specialty programs, post-acute services, digital health and population-health management, with an organizational orientation toward improving access, quality and continuity of care for the communities it serves.
