Introduction

For October 2026, we are looking for trainees for various areas within TenneT: Operate, Onshore, Offshore, Design, and Digital & Technology Transformation. You can apply for one position only. This role is within the Offshore Division .

As an International Trainee in TenneT's Offshore Division , you will help connect massive offshore wind farms to the onshore grid - a key step toward a clean energy future. Offshore is where innovation meets impact: we design, build, and operate the high-voltage connections that bring renewable energy from the sea to millions of households. You'll be part of international teams delivering complex projects that expand Europe's offshore grid and make the energy transition a reality. Every new cable and hub you help create brings us closer to a climate-neutral future.

Your role

Our 18-month International Traineeship Programme is the ideal way to start your career in the energy sector. You will prepare for a future role in our Offshore division - where we develop, construct, and maintain critical infrastructure - while also having the opportunity to explore other areas of TenneT to broaden your perspective.

  • A Tailored Journey - Three rotations, primarily in the offshore division, plus the opportunity to look beyond and gain insights into other areas of TenneT.
  • Impact from Day One - Work on real projects that strengthen the grid and accelerate the energy transition.
  • International Exposure - Collaborate across borders and see how onshore and offshore developments fit into the bigger picture.
  • Learning Community - Join a network of trainees, experts and alumni, with training modules and internal consulting projects to boost your development.

As a trainee for our Offshore division , you will contribute to projects such as:

  • Designing of new transmission cables, substations, and offshore hubs that strengthen TenneT's future energy infrastructure.
  • Supporting Primary Technology leads on platform cables and switchgear by coordinating test activities and fostering alignment between suppliers and asset managers.
  • Acting as Sub-Project Lead for an offshore wind farm interface, ensuring seamless technical and operational integration.
  • Contributing to the 2GW program by supporting HVDC component design reviews and exploring innovative AI applications to enhance project performance.

Where you will work

Offshore is responsible for the development, construction, and management of the offshore electricity grid. With the North Sea as the green engine of the energy transition, Offshore plays a clear and vital role within TenneT's organisational structure. The Offshore division manages the entire lifecycle of all TenneT offshore installations, from development and realisation to maintenance and handover to the Operate division. A crucial task is the construction of 2 GW offshore 'sockets', which collect and transport generated wind energy to the mainland.

Your profile & background

We're looking for graduates who want to build the backbone of the energy transition.

  • Education - A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering & Management.
  • Thinker & Do-er - You are results-oriented and bring both analytical thinking and action, using your project management skills to turn ideas into results.
  • Energy Curiosity - You are fascinated by the challenges and opportunities for sustainable technology and large-scale infrastructure.
  • Language - Proficiency in English is required, learning Dutch is not mandatory at entry, but learning Dutch will be part of your development during the traineeship.
  • Flexibility - Open to travel and working at different TenneT locations.
  • Residence - Because you'll be working in the office 2-3 days per week, you need live in the Netherlands during the traineeship. You'll also join us in person for the recruitment day for the selection process.
  • Experience - hips or relevant work experience are a plus.

Company Information

Company Name: TenneT

Company Website: https://www.tennet.eu

TenneT is a major European electricity transmission system operator (TSO) that operates and develops the high‑voltage electricity transmission networks in the Netherlands and Germany. The organization emerged from liberalization and reform efforts in the European energy sector in the late 1990s and early 2000s and today functions as a dual‑jurisdiction group comprising TenneT TSO B.V. in the Netherlands and TenneT TSO GmbH in Germany. These entities operate within a unified corporate framework and share common standards, technology platforms, and grid operation practices to secure a reliable supply of electricity across borders. The primary objective of TenneT across both countries is to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient transport of electricity from generation sources to end users while enabling cross-border exchange of power with neighboring electricity systems. This dual operation makes TenneT one of the central transmission system operators in Europe, deeply involved in the integration of renewable energy sources, improvements to grid resilience, and the development of the continental energy landscape necessary for the energy transition. Core business activities include the real-time operation of the transmission network, planning and execution of grid expansions, and ongoing maintenance of transmission assets. TenneT’s network operations center coordinates the dispatch and balancing of electricity flows to prevent outages and maintain system frequency within statutory tolerances. The company manages the lifecycle of its assets—from design and procurement through construction and commissioning to ongoing maintenance and eventual retirement—employing rigorous asset management, safety, and reliability standards. In addition to day-to-day network operation, TenneT engages in long-range grid planning to accommodate projected generation and demand growth, including large-scale offshore wind, solar, and other renewable resources. The planning process considers load growth, generation patterns, grid bottlenecks, congestion management, and the development of interconnections with neighboring grids, with the aim of strengthening the reliability of the European power system and supporting regional energy security. A distinguishing aspect of TenneT’s activities is its offshore transmission program. The company designs and constructs offshore grid connections that bring electricity generated by offshore wind farms to onshore networks. These offshore grid connections typically involve high-voltage direct current (HVDC) or high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) links and are paired with onshore substations and interconnection points to integrate offshore capacity into the wider grid. The offshore programs associated with TenneT include well-known transmission links that connect offshore wind production areas to onshore networks, enabling the export of wind energy from Dutch and German offshore sites. The company also operates cross-border HVDC interconnectors that facilitate electricity trade with neighboring systems, strengthening regional energy security and supporting market integration across Europe. Technological capability and innovation play a central role in TenneT’s operations. The TSO employs sophisticated grid control technologies, advanced protection schemes, and digital monitoring to manage real-time grid security, contingency analysis, and fast restoration procedures. It also participates in joint European initiatives to harmonize network codes, grid connection standards, and market mechanisms. TenneT’s activities align with wider European goals for the energy transition by enabling the reliable integration of renewables, improving the resilience of the electricity system, and enabling cross-border flows that support price convergence and energy availability for consumers and businesses. In practice, this means coordinating with other European TSOs through bodies like ENTSO‑E, contributing to the development of common European grid codes, and supporting cross-border transmission planning to ensure coordinated investment across the continent. In governance terms, TenneT operates under national regulatory frameworks in the Netherlands and Germany, with oversight and licensing processes that ensure compliance with safety, reliability, and environmental standards. The company publishes its grid development plans and investment programs on official platforms, providing transparency about planned expansions and the timelines for new interconnections and capacity upgrades. TenneT’s dual presence in the Netherlands and Germany positions it to play a pivotal role in driving cross-border collaboration and the expansion of interconnections that are essential to Europe’s energy market integration and decarbonization agenda. The organization communicates with policymakers, regulators, energy market participants, and the public to explain grid-related projects, safety considerations, and the expected benefits of new transmission capacity for consumers and the broader economy. By maintaining robust operational capabilities, investing in modern grid infrastructure, and pursuing cross-border cooperation, TenneT contributes to a secure, sustainable, and interconnected European energy system.
