DSM-Firmenich Plant Proteins is the dedicated plant-protein ingredients and solutions business within DSM‑Firmenich, the global science- and technology-driven company formed by the 2023 combination of Royal DSM and Firmenich. The Plant Proteins unit focuses on developing, producing and supporting the use of plant-derived proteins and protein-based systems for food and beverage manufacturers, ingredient suppliers and brand owners seeking to formulate plant-based foods, meat and dairy alternatives, nutritional products and fortified foods. The business combines expertise in protein functionality, food formulation, processing technologies and sensory optimization to help customers achieve target nutrition profiles, texture, mouthfeel and flavor while meeting industrial processing requirements. Core business activities - Ingredient development and manufacturing: DSM‑Firmenich Plant Proteins develops and supplies a range of plant-protein ingredients and blends designed to deliver specific functional properties (for example solubility, emulsification, gelation, water-binding, foaming and texturization) required by manufacturers of plant-based meats, dairy alternatives, beverages, bakery and nutrition bars. Offerings typically include protein concentrates and isolates, texturized proteins for meat analogue applications, and customized blends engineered for targeted performance in particular applications. - Application and formulation support: The business operates application laboratories and technical support services to assist customers with product development, scale-up and sensory optimization. These services cover formulation guidance, processing parameters (thermal, extrusion, high-shear) and shelf-life/stability testing to ensure ingredient performance across industrial production conditions. - Taste and sensory optimization: Leveraging the broader DSM‑Firmenich organization’s capabilities in flavor and sensory science, the Plant Proteins unit provides integrated flavor and masking solutions to address common plant-protein challenges such as off-notes, astringency and aftertaste, enabling better consumer acceptance of plant-based products. - R&D and innovation: Ongoing research focuses on improving the functional performance of plant proteins, enhancing nutritional profiles (including amino acid balance and protein quality), reducing anti-nutritional factors, and developing processing approaches that improve texture and bite in meat analogues. Sustainability and circularity considerations are incorporated into innovation priorities, including optimization of ingredient yields and reduction of environmental footprint associated with production and sourcing. - Customer partnerships and co-development: DSM‑Firmenich Plant Proteins engages in collaborative development projects with food manufacturers, start-ups in the alternative protein space, and ingredient partners to co-create formulations and custom ingredient solutions for specific product launches. Main products and services The product portfolio centers on plant-derived protein ingredients tailored for diverse food applications. Typical categories include protein isolates and concentrates providing high protein content and specific functional properties; texturized proteins and concentrates designed to impart fibrous structure and meat-like texture in analogues; and tailored protein blends formulated to meet nutritional, sensory and processing targets. Services commonly provided alongside ingredients include application lab trials, formulation and process optimization, flavor-masking and sensory improvement solutions, regulatory and labeling support, and scale-up assistance to industrial manufacturing. Industry positioning and capabilities DSM‑Firmenich Plant Proteins operates at the intersection of food-ingredient technology, nutrition science and sensory/flavor technology. The unit draws on DSM‑Firmenich’s broader portfolio of nutrition ingredients, enzymes, processing knowledge and flavor expertise to provide end-to-end solutions for customers moving toward plant-based portfolios. This integrated approach aims to address the three core challenges for plant-based products: nutritional adequacy, sensory appeal (taste and texture), and industrial scalability. The business serves global food manufacturers, contract manufacturers, and brands across categories such as meat alternatives, dairy alternatives (e.g., plant-based yogurts and beverages), sports and clinical nutrition, baked goods and savory applications. Sustainability and market focus DSM‑Firmenich Plant Proteins aligns product development with trends driving the plant-protein market, including consumer demand for sustainable protein sources, clean-label declarations, and improved nutritional quality. The business emphasizes solutions that enable clients to reduce reliance on animal proteins while meeting regulatory and consumer expectations for product performance. While the specific sustainability claims of individual ingredients depend on sourcing and processing choices, the unit typically supports industry efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, land and water use associated with protein supply chains through ingredient selection and process efficiencies. Relationship to DSM‑Firmenich As a business area of DSM‑Firmenich, Plant Proteins benefits from the combined group’s R&D infrastructure, global manufacturing footprint and cross-disciplinary capabilities in nutrition, biotechnology and flavor science. The creation of DSM‑Firmenich brought together DSM’s materials and nutritional science depth with Firmenich’s flavor and consumer-sensory expertise; the Plant Proteins unit is positioned to leverage both strengths to accelerate development of commercially viable plant-based foods. Customers typically engage the unit for both off-the-shelf ingredient solutions and bespoke, co-developed formulations tailored to specific product concepts and processing environments. Geographic scope and customers DSM‑Firmenich Plant Proteins serves global markets with formulation and technical support across major food production regions. Its customers range from large multinational food companies reformulating existing product lines to smaller start-ups launching novel plant-based brands. The unit’s technical teams work with customers through pilot trials and scale-up phases to ensure ingredients perform consistently in production. In summary, DSM‑Firmenich Plant Proteins is a technology- and science-oriented business within DSM‑Firmenich that develops plant-derived protein ingredients, blends and application services to help food manufacturers create nutritionally balanced, sensory-acceptable and industrially scalable plant-based products. It integrates protein functionality expertise with flavor and formulation support to address the main technical barriers to mainstream adoption of plant-based foods.
